Artist Biography

Abda Fayyaz is a Dubai-based visual artist whose practice explores abstraction as a means of investigating perception, rhythm and the interconnected systems that shape existence. Through sustained processes of accumulation and repetition, she develops intricate visual structures that examine how natural, temporal and psychological conditions become embedded within material form.

Over more than a decade of independent practice, Abda has cultivated a distinctive visual language characterised by precision, restraint and density. While rooted in the spatial logic of Arabic calligraphic traditions, her work moves beyond language itself, treating gesture as a structural and perceptual system rather than a vehicle for textual meaning. The resulting works occupy a space between drawing, painting and visual enquiry, inviting prolonged engagement and multiple readings.

Her practice has increasingly evolved towards a research-led approach, where each body of work functions as an independent conceptual investigation. Rather than producing thematic collections, Abda develops long-term projects that explore distinct questions surrounding emergence, duration, geological memory, psychological space and ecological systems, while remaining connected through a broader philosophy of relationality.

Abda has participated in nearly thirty exhibitions across the UAE and internationally, including presentations in Paris and London. Her work has been exhibited at Maraya Art Centre, selected for three consecutive editions of DIFC Art Nights, and acquired into the Abu Dhabi Executive Office Collection.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe that nothing exists in isolation. From a grain of sand to the vastness of the cosmos, I understand existence through relationships: each form shaped by, and contributing to, something beyond itself. We belong to one another in ways that are not always visible, and each of us carries a purpose within this shared existence.

This belief opens an ongoing enquiry into purpose, perception and belonging. What connects us beneath our apparent differences? How might we become attentive to what we cannot immediately see? These questions inform both my visual language and my sense of our place in the world. I return to them through my work, exploring how we might recognise our connection while honouring what makes each of us distinct.

I understand life as a continuity of transformations. What appears to end may continue in another form, becoming part of something we cannot yet recognise. In this understanding, nothing is wasted; every form and every stage of existence holds meaning, even when its purpose remains beyond our comprehension.

Through art, I seek to create space for this recognition: that our presence matters, that our differences have value, and that we participate in a larger whole. We are all connected. We are all one.

ARTISTIC ENQUIRY

The practice is concerned with how abstraction can make visible conditions that are often experienced but rarely observed.

Rather than representing landscapes, memories or spiritual ideas, the work investigates the structures through which these experiences emerge. Questions of duration, perception, rhythm, accumulation and transformation become central to the studio process, allowing each body of work to function as a sustained investigation into a particular conceptual territory.

Repetition occupies a central role within this enquiry. Rather than functioning as ornament or symbolism, it operates as a methodology for sustained attention. Through repeated gestures, gradual layering and prolonged engagement, visual fields emerge that resist immediate comprehension, unfolding instead through time and observation.

The practice also examines the relationship between visible and invisible systems. Whether considering geological processes, biological organisation, atmospheric conditions or psychological perception, the work explores how underlying structures generate experiences that exceed direct representation.

While each research project addresses different questions, together they contribute to a broader investigation into how order, instability, continuity and change coexist within both natural and human environments.

Practice

Abda’s practice is rooted in the belief that existence unfolds through interconnected systems rather than isolated events. While this proposition forms the philosophical foundation of her work, each body of work investigates this relationship through a distinct conceptual territory, ranging from emergence and geological memory to perceptual instability, atmospheric space and biological rhythm.

Rather than using abstraction to illustrate ideas, the practice employs it as a mode of enquiry. Repetition becomes a means of sustained observation, allowing forms to emerge gradually through processes of accumulation, attention and time. Each project develops as an independent investigation while contributing to a broader understanding of how invisible structures shape both natural and human experience.

Foundation

We All Are One. We All Are Connected.

The practice begins with a simple proposition: nothing exists in isolation.

From microscopic organisms to planetary systems, individual lives to collective histories, every form participates in larger structures of relationship. These structures are rarely visible in their entirety, yet they shape the rhythms, movements and transformations that define our experience of the world.

This understanding forms the philosophical foundation of the practice. It is not presented as a conclusion or belief system, but as an ongoing point of departure. Rather than illustrating interconnectedness directly, the work investigates how it becomes perceptible through repetition, accumulation, rhythm and pattern.

Nature offers a continual reminder that complexity emerges through relationships rather than singular events. Rivers carve landscapes through persistence rather than force. Cellular structures organise themselves through repeated acts of growth. Geological formations record histories that unfold beyond human timescales. The practice draws from these observations, recognising repetition not as duplication but as a generative principle through which systems evolve.

Although this philosophy remains constant, it does not determine the meaning of individual bodies of work. Instead, it provides the conceptual ground from which each research project develops its own distinct enquiry

Selected Essay

Writing and journalling are essential to how I observe and make sense of the world. They allow me to linger with a detail, follow a connection and give space to a question before it takes form in my art. I write to remain attentive and to what I encounter, what I feel, and what I have yet to understand.

These essays and thoughts share that ongoing reflection: on the relationships that connect us, the purpose within each form, and the meanings we might discover when we look a little longer.

Beyond What Words Can Express

Beyond What Words Can Express

The alphabet alif and the word Allah are so infinite that I don’t think my lifelong work will be enough to construe them or even scrape the surface.

As expressed in the Qur’an:

“If all the trees of the earth were pens and the oceans ink, with many more oceans for replenishing them, the words of Allah would never come to an end.”
